What Does A DOT Physical Exam Include?
At the start of a DOT physical exam, the
medical examiner will fill out a medical health history form and will
ask you questions regarding your medical history. You'll be asked
to provide the following health information:
Medications you are having or have had before.
Procedures and treatments you are having or have had before.
Symptoms or medical conditions you are currently experiencing
A full physical examination will
be performed, which includes the following:
Hearing
Vision
Blood pressure
Urinalysis and other diagnostic tests
Urinalysis will be performed, if requested by the
employer, to reveal blood sugar levels and other health indications.
Urinalysis can also be used for drug tests. Blood may be drawn, and
additional in-office diagnostics, such as an electrocardiogram, may be
performed if needed.
During a DOT physical, the doctor will check your vision, hearing, blood pressure, and overall physicality. They will also take a urine sample to check for medical issues that may prevent you from driving safely.
How to prepare for a DOT physical?
To prepare for a DOT physical, hydrate with water, avoid coffee and alcohol, get enough sleep, and take your medications as usual.
What should I bring to the appointment?
Before going to your exam, make sure to bring your driver’s license, list of medications you are taking, medical history, contact lenses or prescription glasses you use, or hearing aids, if you use them.
How often do I need a DOT physical exam?
A DOT physical exam is good for two years. If you have medical conditions, you may be asked to get a DOT physical more often.
Can I wear contact lenses or hearing aids during the DOT physical?
Yes. You can wear contact lenses or hearing aids during the DOT physical so the doctor can also check if your glasses, contacts, and hearing aid need to be updated.
Does my insurance cover this service?
No, a DOT Physical exam is not covered by insurance and can only be paid for out of pocket.
