What is a USCIS immigration medical exam?

This medical is requireed for any individual, regardless of sex or age who plans to immigrate to or acquire a permanent residence card (green card) in the United States. It helps determine the health of an immigrant as per the rules and regulations.

An immigration medical exam is a medical exam that evaluates your health by reviewing or testing the following areas:

  • A review of your past/current medical history
  • Vaccination or immunization records
  • A physical and mental evaluation
  • Drug and alcohol screening
  • Tests for various diseases via blood, urine or x-rays

What do I need to prepare for my USCIS medical exam?

You’ll need to bring a vaccine or immunization record, government-issued photo ID, an I-693 form and/or medical insurance card. For more details on what to bring, check the USCIS website.

Please note that as of Oct. 1, 2021, USCIS now requires applicants to be fully vaccinated for COVID-19 before completing I-693 forms. If not, you must file for a waiver with USCIS and provide this to the medical examiner or civil surgeon.

Does USCIS medical exam test for drugs?

Yes. You’ll be tested for drugs during your USCIS medical exam. If you’re taking medication or treatment that may affect your drug test please be sure to bring your medication or prescription to your USCIS medical exam and show the provider so a note can be made. If your drug test comes back positive due to use you won’t qualify for immigration application.

Who fills out my USCIS medical exam form?

Only USCIS-approved physicians can perform this immigration medical exam and no one else. You can find a USCIS-approved physician, sometimes referred to as ‘designated civil surgeons, with the help of the USCIS “Find a Doctor” website.

After completing your USCIS medical exam, you must be given your completed USCIS medical exam form (I-693 form) in a sealed envelope.

Once in your possession, ONLY the applicant has the responsibility to submit the form. It cannot be submitted by a medical provider or healthcare clinic/center on your behalf.

Please do not accept your I-693 form if it is not in a sealed envelope. The USCIS will not accept your document in an open or altered envelope. So be sure that it remains sealed when filing your I-693 form.

How much does a USCIS medical exam cost?

Does insurance cover USCIS medical exam?

No, Most health and insurance plans do not cover the USCIS immigration medical exams. Feel free to check with your healthcare provider if you’d like. But you can request an invoice for possible reimbursement.

What health conditions or reasons will prevent me from getting my green card?

There are four main public health reasons a Form I-693 would make you admissible, which include:

  • Communicable diseases
  • Drug abuse or addiction
  • Failure to show proof of required vaccines
  • Mental disorders that lead to harmful behaviors

How long are medical exams valid for USCIS?

A USCIS medical exam validity lasts for two years from the date it’s taken. However it’s important to submit your USCIS medical exam form as soon as possible or bring it to the interview before the two-year expiration date.

How long does the USCIS medical exam take?

The time may vary based on which healthcare clinic, hospital or urgent care you’re attending. However typically immigration medical exams should take between 1-2 hours to be completed. Please be mindful of this when booking or attending your appointment as the medical exam cannot be rushed.
