Abilify Maintena

Abilify Maintena is a long-acting aripiprazole injection for adults with schizophrenia and for maintenance treatment of bipolar I disorder on its own. A healthcare professional gives it into the shoulder or buttock muscle, usually once a month. The label says not to give a maintenance dose sooner than 26 days after the previous injection. Its role is ongoing treatment. It is not the same product as oral Abilify, Abilify Asimtufii, Aristada or Aristada Initio.

Eligibility: Abilify Maintena

The clinician reviews the diagnosis, previous benefit, side effects and whether aripiprazole is tolerated by mouth. For someone who has never taken it, oral tolerability must be established first. A medication review also checks drugs that change aripiprazole levels, including certain antidepressants, antibiotics and seizure medicines. Each administration record should show the exact dose, date and next due date. Psychiatric follow-up reviews whether the treatment still meets your goals. A community injection visit does not replace that review.

The boxed warning states that antipsychotics increase the risk of death in older adults with dementia-related psychosis. This medicine is not approved for that use. Weight gain, restlessness, injection-site pain and sedation are common effects in the schizophrenia studies. Monitoring includes weight, blood sugar, cholesterol, blood pressure and movement symptoms. Report new urges to gamble, shop, eat compulsively or engage in sexual activity. Aripiprazole can impair thinking or movement. Avoid driving until you know how it affects you. Seek emergency care for severe trouble breathing, throat or tongue swelling, loss of consciousness, or high fever with severe muscle stiffness and confusion. Contact the treating team promptly for new involuntary movements, severe restlessness, worsening psychosis, marked dizziness or troublesome injection-site symptoms. Do not wait for the next routine injection to report a serious concern.

Follow-up and treatment review

If the second or third dose is late, the restart threshold differs from the fourth or later doses. More than five weeks after an early dose or more than six weeks after later maintenance can require a new initiation regimen. Give the team your actual injection dates. Do not decide that you can safely skip treatment because you still feel well.

Asimtufii benefits and charges

No total-cost saving follows from the interval alone. Ask about the Asimtufii drug benefit, administration fee, psychiatric follow-up and monitoring. Confirm whether a start sequence, any Maintena component and oral coverage need separate authorization or prescriptions. The payer’s approval dates and pharmacy requirements must match the actual plan. A two-month medicine schedule does not eliminate all intervening care costs. Obtain an estimate for your regimen rather than comparing advertised per-visit prices or assuming the next injection is covered because the last one was.

Abilify Asimtufii

Abilify Asimtufii is a long-acting aripiprazole injection given into the buttock muscle every two months. It is approved for adults with schizophrenia and for maintenance treatment of bipolar I disorder on its own. It can reduce how often you need an injection, but it does not reduce the importance of psychiatric follow-up. The interval is based on the prescribed product, not on how often symptoms are noticeable.

Eligibility: Abilify Asimtufii

Oral aripiprazole tolerability must be known before starting. The prescriber reviews diagnosis, prior injections, interactions, side effects, pregnancy questions and the ability to keep scheduled care. People already receiving Maintena may have a labelled transition at the next scheduled Maintena injection. A transition from another medicine requires its own plan.

A 14-day regimen instead uses Asimtufii with oral aripiprazole or the current oral antipsychotic. These are prescriber-directed alternatives.

Plan the two-month cycle

The usual interval is 56 days. The label permits specified timing flexibility around the scheduled dose. Confirm the next appointment before leaving, and arrange psychiatric review between injections when needed.

Bring the exact product name, prescribed strength, last injection date, oral medicine list and the responsible prescriber’s contact information. Include discharge notes, recent blood tests and any written start or restart plan. Tell the team about pregnancy, breastfeeding, allergies, seizures, fainting, substance use and new medicines or supplements.
