Influenza testing

Flu testing can help clarify a sudden fever, cough, body aches or other influenza-like illness. The clinician considers how long you have been sick and whether the result will affect treatment. Flu symptoms can overlap with COVID-19, RSV and other infections.

How influenza testing works

Rapid antigen tests and molecular tests have different sensitivity. A negative rapid flu test does not rule out influenza. Molecular testing is more sensitive and may be useful when the answer affects care. Test accuracy also depends on specimen collection and the timing of illness.

Eligibility: Influenza testing

People with severe illness or higher risk of flu complications need prompt assessment. Older adults, young children, pregnant patients and people with certain chronic conditions may need treatment decisions without waiting for a test result. A vaccine history does not completely exclude flu.

What to expect: Influenza testing

The visit reviews symptoms, breathing, hydration and risk factors. The clinician chooses the test if needed and discusses supportive care or an antiviral. Antibiotics do not treat influenza itself. A suspected bacterial complication requires a separate assessment.

Preparing for your appointment

Bring your symptom start date, medicine list, previous test results and vaccination history if known. Respiratory swabs generally do not require fasting. Ask about the collection method and how results will be reported.

Risks and when to seek help

Severe breathing difficulty, chest pain, confusion or inability to drink requires urgent assessment or emergency care. Seek reassessment if symptoms improve and then worsen. A negative test must not delay care for a serious illness.

Follow-up and treatment review

Follow the treatment and return instructions. Contact the clinician if you worsen or develop a new symptom. Discuss vaccination when appropriate after the acute illness, but do not treat a flu test as a vaccine appointment.

Confirm the assay, current test availability and expected reporting time at your chosen clinic. Rapid sample collection and rapid results are different claims. Coverage and charges depend on the visit and test, not the word flu alone.
