Submit with I-485 when required

USCIS requires certain adjustment applicants to submit Form I-693 with Form I-485 or risk rejection.

Use the current edition

USCIS form edition rules can change, so applicants should follow the current Form I-693 guidance and instructions.

Keep the envelope sealed

When USCIS requires a sealed packet, do not open it before submission.

Form I-693 steps to plan for

  • Review the current USCIS Form I-693 guidance and attorney instructions before filing.
  • Schedule the medical exam with a USCIS-designated civil surgeon workflow.
  • Bring ID, vaccine records, translations, and any USCIS notices or RFEs.
  • Complete required tests, vaccine review, and any follow-up steps.
  • Receive final packet instructions when the civil surgeon completes the form.

Current timing points

  • Since December 2, 2024, USCIS requires certain applicants to submit Form I-693 with Form I-485.
  • Since June 11, 2025, USCIS says Form I-693 signed on or after November 1, 2023 is valid only while the application it was submitted with remains pending.
  • If the application is withdrawn or denied, a future filing generally needs a newly completed Form I-693.
  • If the civil surgeon signs the form July 3, 2025 or later, USCIS accepts only the 01/20/25 edition.
