All Uber and Lyft drivers in New York City must have an NYC TLC medical exam from an urgent care center. Read TLC medical FAQs and answers here. These will help you better understand the medical exam that will help you secure a TLC license in NYC.

What is the TLC medical exam?

The NYC Taxi and Limousine Commission requires that all for-hire drivers should complete a medical examination. A practicing physician or medical provider should declare them fit to drive. You can get a TLC medical exam at an urgent care center near you.

Who needs a TLC medical exam?

The following NYC drivers are required to go through a TLC Exam:

  •     Yellow or medallion taxi cab drivers
  •     Green or boro taxi drivers
  •     Uber drivers
  •     Lyft drivers
  •     Luxury limousines drivers
  •     Black car limo drivers

What does a TLC medical exam cover?

A TLC medical exam aims to determine if you have medical conditions that may prevent you from operating a vehicle safely and effectively.

The medical professional will first ask about your and your family’s medical history. This will include surgeries, illnesses, and medications.

After that, you’ll undergo a physical examination which will usually involve the following:

  •     Blood pressure and heart rate check
  •     Hearing and vision screening
  •     General physical evaluation

During the physical exam, the doctor will listen to your heart and lungs and examine your ears, nose, and throat. They’ll also examine your posture and spine for any abnormalities and check your reflexes and neurological function.

The doctor or health provider may order additional tests, such as an ECG, to check if you have heart problems. This can help determine if you can safely operate a motor vehicle.

What do I need to bring to a TLC NYC medical exam appointment?

Print the New York City TLC medical certification form and bring it with your NY State driver’s license to your appointment. Bring a list of any medications that you take, including over-the-counter pills and vitamins. Bring your recent medical records as well.

What happens after the TLC medical exam?

After the TLC medical exam, the licensed medical provider will certify that they’ve examined you and declare if you’re medically fit to safely operate a vehicle or not.

If you’re medically fit to operate a TLC vehicle, you must submit the form with your TLC application online here. You have 90 days from your TLC application submission to submit the TLC medical examination form. Your TLC application will be denied if you don’t submit it within 90 days.

How do I schedule a TLC medical exam?

Book your TLC medical examination today so you can get to work immediately. You only have 90 days from the date you submit your TLC application to take the medical exam and get the results to the NYC Taxi and Limousine Commission.
