Understand the work in a clinic

Medical assistants can support both the patient experience and clinic operations. A role may include preparation for visits, rooming workflows, documentation support and other assigned tasks appropriate to training and authorization.

Ask for the actual duties in the vacancy. Nao Medical’s urgent care, primary care and specialty services create different patient workflows, so one clinic assignment may differ from another.

Urgent care and primary care routines

Urgent care can involve changing arrival patterns and same-day concerns. Primary care may involve scheduled visits and ongoing relationships. Both settings need accurate handoffs, organized rooms and clear patient communication.

If the position spans both settings, ask how the team handles competing demands and who assigns priorities. A useful orientation should explain the workflow and the limits of each task.

Know the New York boundaries

New York does not license “medical assistant” as a professional title. The state’s guidance describes limits on what unlicensed staff may do and emphasizes appropriate training and supervision.

Do not assume that delegation permits tasks requiring medical judgment or the work of a licensed professional. Ask how the clinic trains, verifies competence and assigns authorized duties. Refer to the official guidance for task-specific questions.

What to ask at an interview

Review the clinic, working hours and support available during a busy shift. Ask how new staff learn the systems and receive feedback.

  • What tasks are assigned, and which require additional training?
  • Who supervises the work and answers questions on shift?
  • How are patient concerns handed to a licensed clinician?
  • What are the schedule, location and published compensation?
  • Does the role include front-desk work, clinical support or both?

Prepare your resume

Describe relevant clinic experience, training, certifications and patient-facing work. Give concrete examples of accuracy, teamwork and reliable communication. State your availability and the locations you can reach.
