Child ADHD evaluation in NYC and Long Island

A structured, in-person child and adolescent evaluation using parent, school, health, developmental, and behavioral information.

Initial visit is in person. Child ADHD assessment usually needs a deeper review than a brief virtual medication visit. Diagnosis and medication are not guaranteed at the first appointment.

ADHD is not diagnosed from one symptom, one questionnaire, or a short medication request. The evaluation looks for a persistent pattern across settings, functional impact, and other conditions that can explain or complicate the symptoms.

Bring the full picture School reports, prior evaluations, medical history, sleep, hearing, vision, development, and family concerns can all change the next step.

What a child ADHD evaluation includes

Parent and child interview

Review concerns, onset, daily patterns, family history, strengths, stressors, and impact at home, school, and with peers.

Teacher or school information

Collect information from a teacher or another adult who sees the child in a different setting, along with school records when available.

Standardized rating scales

Use validated forms to document symptoms and impairment; scales support but do not replace clinical diagnosis.

Medical and developmental review

Review sleep, hearing, vision, development, medicines, substance exposure, physical symptoms, and other possible contributors.

Coexisting-condition screen

Assess anxiety, depression, behavior problems, learning or language disorders, autism, tics, sleep disorders, and other relevant concerns.

Plan and follow-up

Explain whether the next step is behavioral support, school coordination, medication discussion, testing, primary care, or specialist referral.

What to complete before the visit

Parent intake

Complete the history and symptom forms sent after scheduling. Include current medicines, allergies, prior diagnoses, and major health events.

Teacher input

Ask the school to complete requested rating scales or provide recent observations, report cards, evaluations, and support plans.

Prior records

Bring prior psychological, developmental, pediatric, school, therapy, or medication records when available.

Questions and goals

Write down the main concerns, what has already been tried, and the changes the family hopes to see.

Treatment is age-specific

  • For children younger than 6, parent training in behavior management is generally the first treatment step before medication.
  • For school-age children and adolescents, treatment may combine behavioral support, school interventions, and medication when appropriate.
  • Medication selection requires diagnosis, health and family history, vital signs, interaction review, monitoring, and informed consent.
  • Complex symptoms or coexisting conditions may require a pediatric, psychiatric, psychological, developmental, sleep, learning, or other specialist referral.

Frequently asked questions

AAP guidance recommends evaluating children and adolescents ages 4 through 18 when academic or behavioral concerns include inattention, hyperactivity, or impulsivity. Nao Medical confirms age and visit eligibility when scheduling.
No. Diagnosis uses history, symptoms across settings, standardized rating scales, and review of other conditions that can look similar or occur at the same time.
Information from a teacher or another adult who sees the child in a different setting is usually important. The care team will explain which forms or records are needed.
Not automatically. The first visit focuses on evaluation. Diagnosis, age, health history, records, vital signs, safety, and the need for additional information all affect the treatment plan.
The clinician screens for conditions that can mimic or coexist with ADHD and may coordinate pediatric, behavioral-health, school, or specialist follow-up.
The initial child ADHD evaluation is in person. It includes direct clinical assessment and may require vital signs, an examination, hearing or vision review, school information, rating scales, records, and additional follow-up before diagnosis or treatment planning.
Nao Medical accepts Medicaid and many major insurance plans. Coverage depends on the visit type, clinician, testing, forms, and follow-up services.
