Yeztugo side effects and safety

Possible HIV exposure within 72 hours?
If you may have been exposed to HIV within the past 72 hours, seek urgent medical evaluation now. PEP works best when started as soon as possible. Do not wait for a routine PrEP appointment; go to an emergency department if prompt evaluation is unavailable.
Common effects and injection-site changes
Common adverse reactions in the prescribing information include injection-site reactions, headache and nausea. Pain, redness, swelling, hardening or a lump can occur near the injection. Some lumps can persist for months.
Contact the clinic about symptoms that persist, worsen or concern you. Skin ulceration or tissue damage has been reported with incorrect intradermal administration. Seek prompt medical assessment for an open wound, severe worsening pain or concerning skin changes. Call 911 for severe trouble breathing or another life-threatening reaction.
Why HIV testing matters every time
HIV drug resistance can develop if Yeztugo is used when HIV infection is present or develops during use. It must not be used with unknown or positive HIV status. Required tests before initiation and each injection help the clinician decide whether it is appropriate to continue.
Report a possible exposure or symptoms of a recent infection promptly. A new HIV diagnosis needs a complete HIV treatment regimen selected by a clinician.
Medication review and long-lasting drug levels
Tell the prescriber about all prescriptions, over-the-counter medicines and supplements. Some medicines change lenacapavir levels, and lenacapavir can affect other medicines. Residual drug can remain for 12 months or longer, so this review also matters after injections stop.
The August 2026 label contains specific instructions for some interacting medicines. Do not start, stop or adjust medicines on your own based on an online interaction list.
Late injections, stopping and switching
Contact the clinic before a dose becomes overdue. The clinician may need additional testing, a different schedule or an alternative prevention medicine. Inadequate drug levels can leave you at risk even while some medicine remains in the body.
The time to maximal protection after starting Yeztugo is unknown. Ask about prevention during a transition. Yeztugo does not prevent every STI or replace urgent PEP evaluation after a possible recent exposure.
