Prepare for your first therapy session
You can begin with a few notes about what has been difficult, what you hope to change, and the questions you want to ask.

Have the plan name, member information and insurer contact number ready when you speak with the team. Share them through the practice’s approved intake process. Ask whether the specific therapist and service participate in your exact network, rather than relying on a general list of carriers.
A psychiatry medication appointment and a psychotherapy session can be billed differently. Ask which service you are booking, who will provide it and how your insurer classifies that visit. If you plan to use both services, check benefits and charges for each.
Check the deductible, copay or coinsurance, any referral or prior authorization requirement, and limits that apply to visits. Ask whether telehealth benefits differ from in-person benefits. An initial benefits estimate can change when the insurer processes the claim.
Request the current fee for the first appointment and follow-up sessions. Confirm payment timing, cancellation or missed-appointment charges, and whether any other charges apply. No fixed therapy price or sliding-scale arrangement is promised here.
Tell the team about a plan change and ask whether the proposed therapist remains in network. If you are already in treatment, confirm how to arrange follow-up while coverage is being checked. Do not assume authorization automatically transfers between clinicians.
Ask: Is this clinician in my exact network? Is virtual psychotherapy covered? What is my expected cost for intake and follow-up? Do I need authorization? What happens if a claim is denied? Keep the reference number and date of your benefits conversation.
No. Network, product, clinician, service and benefits can differ. Confirm your exact plan before scheduling.
Yes. Ask which services are being scheduled and verify benefits and fees for each appointment.
Yes. Tell your insurer the appointment is virtual psychotherapy and ask about applicable network and cost-sharing rules.
No. It is an estimate based on available information. The insurer determines payment when it processes the claim.
Request current intake and follow-up fees, payment timing and cancellation terms. Ask about available options without assuming a discount.
Contact Nao’s care team and tell them you are seeking CBT or DBT therapy. Have your exact plan details ready and confirm the appointment type.
