Nucala has several FDA-approved eosinophilic-disease uses, and the dose depends on the condition and age. The first visit confirms the diagnosis, current treatment, laboratory history, prescribing responsibility, coverage path, and appropriate care site. Nucala is maintenance treatment, not rescue treatment

Nucala is not used for sudden bronchospasm, status asthmaticus, or an acute COPD flare. Use the prescribed rescue plan and seek urgent or emergency care when symptoms require it.

What the Nucala evaluation determines

The visit separates the product question from the condition-specific treatment decision. A pulmonary, allergy, or other appropriate specialist may need to direct or confirm the plan.

Approved indication

The current label includes severe eosinophilic asthma, chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps, eosinophilic COPD, EGPA, and HES in defined age groups.

Phenotype and prior treatment

Records may include eosinophil results, exacerbations, steroid use, inhaler or nasal therapy, hospital care, and prior biologic response.

Dose and administration path

Nucala is given subcutaneously every four weeks, but labeled doses and device options vary by indication and age.

Ongoing responsibility

The plan identifies who prescribes, monitors response, handles refills, reviews adverse effects, and coordinates specialty care.

What to expect from evaluation through follow-up

The order and timing depend on diagnosis, specialist responsibility, coverage, medication or infusion acquisition, the accepted care site, and clinical follow-up.

1. Bring the clinical record

Bring the diagnosis, medication list, prior eosinophil tests, exacerbation or hospitalization history, previous biologic records, and insurance information.

2. Confirm the labeled pathway

The clinician verifies the indication, age, phenotype, current controller treatment, contraindications, vaccines, infection history, and specialist involvement.

3. Complete access work

The care team reviews the benefit, documentation, prior authorization, specialty pharmacy, patient cost, delivery address, and accepted receiving site.

4. Schedule only after confirmation

Treatment is scheduled after the prescription, medication receipt, administration location, safety plan, and follow-up responsibility are confirmed.

Nucala is mepolizumab, an IL-5 antagonist given by subcutaneous injection.
For severe asthma, the label includes patients age 6 and older with an eosinophilic phenotype. The dose is 100 mg every four weeks for patients age 12 and older and 40 mg every four weeks for ages 6 through 11.
For adults with inadequately controlled COPD and an eosinophilic phenotype, the labeled dose is 100 mg every four weeks. The dedicated COPD page covers that narrower treatment decision.
The current label also includes adult CRSwNP, adult EGPA, and HES in adults and patients age 12 and older, with indication-specific doses.

Coverage, acquisition, and care-site planning

Administration or infusion site

An evaluation clinic is not automatically a treatment site. The team confirms staff, equipment, emergency readiness, observation, and referral needs for the selected product.

Current product and operations status

DailyMed lists active U.S. BLA and package records for Nucala. That commercial status does not prove Nao stock, payer approval, specialty-pharmacy acceptance, or administration at a specific clinic.

Nucala safety and monitoring

Hypersensitivity reactions, including anaphylaxis, angioedema, bronchospasm, low blood pressure, hives, and rash, have occurred. Get emergency help for severe symptoms.
Herpes zoster has occurred in clinical trials. The clinician reviews whether vaccination is medically appropriate before or during treatment.
Do not stop inhaled or systemic corticosteroids abruptly when starting Nucala. Any reduction must be gradual and supervised.
Treat a pre-existing helminth infection before Nucala. The clinician may pause treatment if an infection does not respond to therapy.
