Xolair for food allergy in NYC

Xolair is FDA-labeled for certain adults and children age 1 and older with IgE-mediated food allergy to reduce allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis, that may occur after accidental exposure to one or more foods.

Patients must continue food-allergen avoidance. Xolair is repeated treatment, not a cure, not permission to eat an allergen, and not emergency treatment for an allergic reaction or anaphylaxis.

Xolair does not replace epinephrine or 911

Use prescribed epinephrine promptly for suspected anaphylaxis and call 911. Xolair is not approved for immediate emergency treatment, even when it is being used for food allergy.

What must be confirmed before Xolair for food allergy

The evaluation verifies IgE-mediated food allergy, the age and dose inputs, current avoidance and emergency planning, and whether repeated treatment fits the patient's goals and risks.

Confirmed IgE-mediated food allergy

The reaction history and targeted testing must support the diagnosis. A positive panel without a compatible reaction is not enough by itself.

Pretreatment total IgE and body weight

The labeled food-allergy dose and interval are selected from pretreatment total IgE and body weight ranges.

A continuing avoidance and epinephrine plan

Treatment does not remove the need to avoid confirmed allergens, carry prescribed epinephrine, and seek emergency care for anaphylaxis.

What to expect from evaluation through follow-up

The order and timing vary by diagnosis, prescribing responsibility, coverage, medication delivery, and the confirmed care site.

1. Confirm the food-allergy diagnosis

Review reaction timing and symptoms, foods and amounts, repeatability, prior testing, emergency treatment, asthma, and other explanations for the reaction.

2. Review dose inputs and safety

3. Strengthen the emergency plan

Review allergen avoidance, cross-contact, epinephrine technique and access, 911 instructions, and school, work, travel, or caregiver needs.

4. Coordinate coverage and delivery

Complete authorization, expected-cost review, specialty-pharmacy routing, manufacturer-support review when eligible, and patient-specific shipment to a confirmed site.

5. Administer and reassess

Begin in an equipped healthcare setting, follow the clinician's observation plan, and reassess reactions, accidental exposures, safety, adherence to avoidance, and ongoing treatment goals.

What Xolair can and cannot do for food allergy

The indication is designed to reduce the risk from accidental exposure. It does not eliminate the allergy or make intentional exposure safe.

The FDA-labeled use includes eligible adults and children age 1 and older with IgE-mediated food allergy.
Xolair is used with continued food-allergen avoidance. Patients should not intentionally eat an allergen to test whether the medication is working.

Treatment is initiated in a healthcare setting equipped to recognize and manage anaphylaxis, with observation set by the clinician.
Use epinephrine and call 911 for suspected food anaphylaxis; do not rely on Xolair, antihistamines, or a clinic call as emergency treatment.
