The PPD or Mantoux skin test checks the body's immune response to tuberculosis bacteria. It can be used for an exposure assessment or a school or workplace requirement.

A PPD test is also called a TB skin test, TST, or Mantoux test. Placement is the first visit; the test is not complete until trained staff read the reaction 48 to 72 hours later. TB blood testing, including QuantiFERON, uses a blood draw. CDC guidance prefers a TB blood test for people who received the BCG vaccine because BCG can affect a skin-test result.

A visit cannot guarantee completion before results or further assessment are available. Bring previous results and TB treatment records. Ask about the timing of live-virus vaccines and a planned test. Keep the exact placement time and reading appointment. Do not repeatedly test a documented prior positive without clinical review. A positive result needs evaluation for TB disease, usually including history, examination and chest imaging, with sputum testing when indicated. Two-step PPD cannot be completed in one visit. The first skin test is read by trained staff 48–72 hours after placement.
