Just when everything is going back to normal, researchers discover a new COVID-19 variant they call Deltacron. It’s a hybrid variant of the delta and omicron strains identified in Europe and the United States. Here’s a look at what scientists know about the new variant so far.
What is Deltacron?
The name itself is an indication that this SARS-CoV-2 variant came from a hybrid fusion of the Delta and Omicron variants. Deltacron is a recombinant virus, which means its DNA is the combination of two different variants of the virus.
This newer version of the coronavirus was first detected in France in January of 2022. Several cases were also reported across the United States and Europe.
Is Deltacron contagious?
Based on the recent reports by the World Health Organization, they identified Deltacron as a variant still under monitoring. Experts are still observing the new variant’s transmissibility and severity as they’re not yet as alarming as the previous strains.
How severe is Deltacron compared to other variants?
As of now, researchers are still learning about Deltacron since they received reports of only a few cases. Doctors expect it to act similarly to Delta and Omicron mutation but they have yet to identify which traits of the two Coronavirus variants are present in the recombinant strain.
Deltacron COVID-19 symptoms
Scientists are still in the process of studying the new Deltacron variant of COVID and they are yet to identify the actual symptoms. With this, public health care experts are advising everyone to be wary of symptoms that may be indicative of Deltacron, such as:
- Runny nose
- Headache
- Fatigue
- Sneezing
- Sore throat
- Persistent cough
- Hoarse voice
- Chills or shivers
- Fever
- Dizziness
- Brain fog
- Muscle pain
- Loss of smell
- Chest pain
Is Deltacron a big concern?
People should expect recombinant variants with an evolving virus like COVID-19. It’s not unusual and it won’t be the last time scientists would find a new variant from two or more strains.
At the moment, infection levels are too low to provide enough information to determine if Deltacron is something that requires immediate medical care. But how effective is the covid vaccine against it? The experts need more information to determine this.
What you can do to protect yourself
Because there have been so few verified Deltacron cases and evidence, it’s too early to tell if Deltacron can cause serious symptoms or complications. Make sure to stay informed about every new variant. New data from the CDC or WHO should be taken seriously and, given how quickly Coronavirus may spread, it’s highly recommended to get a COVID-19 test on a frequent basis.
Wash your hands regularly, stay home if at all possible, avoid close contact with people with COVID-19, wear a face mask especially in crowded places, and to get a shot of FDA-approved COVID vaccines. These are the best ways to prevent the virus from spreading and for keeping your family and community safe.
