What is the COVID-19 RT-PCR NAAT test?

The RT-PCR test is a polymerase chain reaction type of NAAT test (or Nucleic Acid Amplification Test). It can detect RNA from the SARS-COV-2 virus that causes COVID-19. This is different from the 15-minute rapid antigen test and the COVID-19 antibody test. Those check for antigens and antibodies against the spike protein of the virus respectively.

A COVID-19 PCR test must come from a CLIA Certified laboratory. Luckily, Nao Medical has partnered with CLIA certified labs and can provide a CLIA certificate.

To learn more about antibody tests, you can check the department of health website. To get tested, contact us to schedule an appointment.

FAQ

How accurate are COVID-19 PCR tests?

COVID-19 PCR tests are accurate and are considered the gold standard for COVID testing. This type of test is more sensitive and is mostly processed by health professionals in a laboratory.

Where can I get a COVID-19 PCR test for travel?

If you plan on traveling soon, you can get a 1 hour PCR test in New York City at any of Nao Medical locations.

What’s the difference between the standard COVID-19 PCR test and the COVID-19 RT-PCR test?

Both the standard PCR test and RT-PCR test involve taking nasal swab samples. However, the RT-PCR test checks for RNA from the virus that causes COVID-19 and can produce results in a quicker amount of time (as little as 1 hour).

Does my insurance cover the COVID-19 RT-PCR NAAT test?

At Nao Medical, we accept most major insurance plans, but in order to know if your plan covers the test, we would need to run your insurance and this can only be done at the beginning of your visit. If you would like to know ahead of time, please call the number on the back of your insurance card so a representative may let you know which coronavirus test is covered by your insurance plan.
